The move came at a time when the board found that untreated sewage is released daily into the Yamuna in Faridabad and Gurugram . The pollution board thus directed all districts to come up with an immediate action plan to ensure that effluents are not directly discharged into the drains. Three special surveillance teams have been set up by the board to crack down on such units. Each team has three members. Varun Gulati, a Delhi-based social activist, had filed a complaint with HSPCB against these units last year.
Gulati alleged that the units were discharging effluents directly into drains without treating them, which eventually flows into the Yamuna. “The effluents are polluting Yamuna,” he said. Following his complaint, the HSPCB team conducted a survey and identified more than 200 illegal units operational in Gurugram .
“We found that in several areas of the district, dyeing units were operating without permission. They were also using diesel gensets and boilers, which are banned here. The units were sealed and environmental compensation will be imposed on each of them,” said Kuldeep Singh, HSPCB’s regional officer in Gurugram . So far this month, HSPCB has already sealed 36 such units in the district. In Faridabad, six such units have been sealed.
The units that were sealed were functioning from Basai, Bajghera, Daultabad, Suraj Nagar and Dhankot.
“We have also asked DHBVN to snap their electricity connections. Water supply to these factories will also be disconnected and a penalty imposed on each of them within seven days,” Singh said.
